SPAY/NEUTER ADVICE.

Q. Is spay or neuter surgery painful? Can it harm my pet?
During a spay or neuter surgery, dogs and cats are fully anesthetized, so they feel no pain. Afterwards, most animals seem to experience some discomfort, but signs of discomfort disappear within a few days, and with pain management medication, pain may not be experienced at all. Serious harm as a result of spay or neuter surgery is very rare.

Q. Don't spayed or neutered dogs and cats become overweight?
In some dogs and cats, metabolism does decrease following spaying or neutering. Nevertheless, if fed only the appropriate amount of food and if adequately exercised, spayed or neutered dogs and cats are unlikely to become overweight.
Q. Shouldn't a female dog or cat have one litter, or at least one heat cycle, before being spayed?
To the contrary. A dog or cat has the best chance of good health if spayed before their first heat. Early spaying reduces risk of mammary tumors and prevents other health problems, such as life threatening uterine infections, before aging brings greater susceptibility.

Why spay/neuter your pets?

Spaying/neutering is good for your pet. It helps the animal live a longer, happier life and eliminates several kinds of cancer.

Spaying/neutering your pet is good for you. Your pet will become a more affectionate companion. It will be far less likely to roam, spray, fight, bite, or run away. You won't have to deal with females in heat and aggressive males who come around "Lookin' for Love." Neutered male cats have decreased urine odor and are far less inclined to mark their territory by urine spraying. Spayed/neutered animals are not subject to reproductive diseases, which can be both life threatening and costly.

Spaying/neutering your pet is good for your community. We are all affected by animal over-population. Millions of tax dollars are spent to round up lost, abandoned, and unwanted pets. Much of that money is spent to euthanize these animals when homes cannot be found.

At WCG Humane Society, we spay/neuter all of our adoptable pets before adoption, which prevents the birth of hundreds, even thousands of potentially homeless animals.

Be a responsible pet owner. Spay/neuter now!

If you think that letting your dog or cat have just one or two litters of babies won’t hurt anybody, consider this:

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 70,000 puppies and kittens are born each day. In contrast, only 10,000 babies are born.

Compare those two statistics and you will notice that there are NOT enough homes for all the dogs and cats born in this country. Millions of tax dollars are spent annually to round up lost, abandoned, and unwanted pets. Much of that money is spent to euthanize these unwanted pets when homes cannot be found.

Help curb pet overpopulation

The single most responsible thing that every pet owner can do is spay/neuter his/her animal to be sure it does not contribute to the problem of pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanization. This simple procedure has significant impact on assuring all pets have loving, long term homes. Change begins with YOU!
