VOLUNTEER!

Find out about the many volunteer opportunities to help wcghs animals.

Q. I am a retired nurse and would like to find some opportunities to use my skills of caring for the sick and injured. Is there a need for me at the animal shelter?
Yes, indeed! Right now, our cat shelter is in need of an individual just like you to help administer medications and care to cats who need special attention. Please call to set up a time to meet with the Cat Shelter Manager or Assistant Manager to discuss this essential volunteer position. If you prefer to work with dogs, call the Dog Shelter to discuss their volunteer opportunities.

Q. How do I volunteer? Just follow our simple WCGHS Volunteer Process.

* To volunteer with WCGHS, start by filling out a ‘Volunteer Application Form.

* Application can be submitted by Email, regular mail, or turned in to manager of the dog or cat shelter who forwards it to Volunteer Committee Chairperson

* Volunteer Committee Chairperson collects each ‘Volunteer Application Form’ once per week

* Volunteer Committee Chairperson reviews application, and then contacts applicant with invitation to attend a ‘Volunteer Orientation Meeting’

* Potential volunteer must attend a ‘Volunteer Orientation Meeting’ before volunteer work can begin

* Once potential volunteer attends ‘Volunteer Orientation Meeting’, his/her application is forwarded to WCGHS staff or volunteer(s) responsible for program and/or shelter where volunteer work will be performed

* WCGHS staff or volunteer will explain the duties and responsibilities to be performed by the volunteer

* Copy of ‘Volunteer Application Form’ is kept by Volunteer Committee

Shelter Cleaners

Light housekeeping including cleaning kennels, changing litter boxes, laundry, dishes, feeding, vacuuming and mopping.

Adoption Center Cleaners

Visit Petco and PetSmart locations where WCGHS offers pet adoptions to clean litter boxes, feed and visit with the cats on display. (Please note our adoption sites on our Contact Us page. Not all locations have our animals available for adoption.)

Adoption Aides and Counselors

Meet with potential adopters and facilitate the adoption process.

Dog Walkers

Regularly walk the dogs. This is great exercise in a nice community park along the Columbia River and at the nearby Washougal Dog Park.

Foster Care

Foster caregivers help raise and socialize kittens and puppies in their private homes, and care for 'Special Needs' pets.

Transporters

Take animals to veterinarian appointments and back and forth to Adoption Centers and other adoption events.

Bedtime Check

Evening pet care. Litter boxes, food, water, and quiet socializing. Great family time where kids can learn the value of volunteer service in the community.

Phone and Data Entry Support

Answer calls about lost and found pets, adoptable pets, and basic shelter information. Help with record keeping.

Community and Special Events

Staff community and fund raising events, give education presentations, and run errands.

Fund raising

Do you have a special talent or skill that would be valuable to a special fund raising effort? Let us know how you would like to help.

Newsletter and Web Site

Contribute articles and help with other tasks needed to produce our newsletters and maintaining our web site. We also need help uploading information on our animals into national animal adoption web site data bases.

Photographer

We are always in need of attractive photos or our cats and dogs to promote their adoption into permanent, loving homes.

Handymen and women

Our dog and cat shelters always need odd jobs and minor maintenance chores. Call us to find out how you can help. Sometimes big jobs, too.

Marketing

Help promote the work of the animal shelters. Encourage pet adoptions. Solicit involvement from local residents, businesses and community organizations. Help raise money to care for the animals.

Don't see a job listed that fits your skills and interests? Call us to chat about areas that interest you. We are sure we can find a volunteer position that's JUST RIGHT for you.
