About Us

Since 1994, the mission of the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society has been to be a caring, permanent presence in Clark County with the purpose of ending euthanasia of adoptable companion animals. Through community education and spay and neuter programs we strive to reduce the numbers of litters born.

Matching healthy, adoptable pets with the right home combined with education on responsible guardianship and care means fewer pets end up abandoned, lost, surrendered or left outside to wander and breed. Our "Pets For a Lifetime'" behavior help line provides information on a wide range of topics and links to other organizations to help pet guardians become aware of things they can do to help their animal companions live healthier, happier, longer lives.

Quality foster care and residence at our shelter assures the animals we take in have a safe place to rest, heal, and find a loving permanent home. Our "Patti Paws" Foster Kitten Program helps caregivers foster those they are sheltering, as we work together to find qualified adopters.

What is a 'no-kill 'shelter? It means euthanizing is not the way we address the pet overpopulation problem. We advocate spaying and neutering all pets and strays before any litters are born. We don't take in more animals than we can properly care for . We encourage those with pet-related issues to educate themselves and work with us to help find solutions before considering surrendering their pets. It also means helping potential adopters choose the right pet in the first place so animals don't end up 'thrown away'. Sadly, most pets surrendered to traditional 'humane' societies are euthanized - over 10,000 animals each year in Clark County!

When animals do come into our care, we provide them with a permanent, safe place to live until we find them new homes. We accept surrendered pets at our shelter by appointment on a case-by-case basis. When the shelter is unable to accept an animal into the shelter, we offer a number of options, support and information to keep the animal safe while a new home is located.

Our shelter houses just cats; however, we offer a variety of services for dogs and their owners, including free behavior consultations as part of the "Pets for a Lifetime" program, adoption options, microchipping, emergency food and rescue referrals.
